Boxhead is the identity created by Begoña Toledo, a multidisciplinary artist born in Spain and based in London, who uses a box-headed character to explore identity, anonymity, and selfhood. Working across street art, painting, digital work, and animation, Toledo builds the character out of geometry and a quiet surrealism that gives shape to inner, private experience.,
Toledo created Boxhead in 2009 after picturing a girl in a white dress running with a cardboard box on her head. She began her career in the Amsterdam street art scene, first with stickers and posters and later painting murals, and had her first solo show at the art-toy gallery Outland. After moving to London in 2012, she was picked up by Moniker Projects, and her 2014 installation We Are All Boxhead let her experiment with digital mediums and live rendering for the first time.
Toledo went on to exhibit at the grand opening of the Rumney Guggenheim Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, alongside artists including Olek, Swoon, and Lady Aiko, and was commissioned to paint a four-storey mural in front of the gallery.,She later painted a large-scale mural in Wynwood as part of Art Basel Miami, and was commissioned by musician Pretty Lights to paint the backdrop for a surprise pop-up concert at New Orleans Jazz Fest marking the release of his single “The Sun Spreads in Our Minds”.Her work has been featured in Hi-Fructose and in books including Women Street Artists, The Wynwood Colouring Book, and New Street Art.
In 2022 Toledo curated “Creative Debuts” at Adidas's flagship store in London, a show that included the artist Gaël Corboz.Of Boxhead, Toledo has said the character has “a rebel attitude in the sense of identity”.
