Anthony Hurd is a multidisciplinary, self-taught painter, illustrator and designer based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, they worked in advertising for 20 years, rising to creative director, before turning to painting full time. Their paintings return to childhood nostalgia and trauma to depict queer people of all ages, body types and skin tones in tenderness and love.
Hurd came out as queer in 1994. Their childhood was marked by addiction in the family, midwestern values, and skateboarding and hardcore music culture. They also opened their own gallery and storefront space in Albuquerque, A. Hurd Gallery. There they debuted the solo show “I was born in a gay bar”, a nostalgic reconciliation of their life before and after coming out as LGBTQ in the 1990s.
