Anne Spalter is a visual artist working across painting, printmaking, animation, and AI generated video, building immersive landscapes where mythic animals, celestial forms, and surreal deserts merge the natural with the cosmic.In the 1990s she founded the first digital fine arts courses at Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, and her textbook The Computer in the Visual Arts became a foundational text used in universities and museums.,
In Escaping Horse (2020), made using a generative adversarial network, pencil lines, graphite shading, spinning windmills, and animated flames combine so seamlessly that it becomes hard to tell which choices were Spalter's and which were the algorithm's.Unconstructed Dream Space #2: Inner and Outer Space (2022), a 25 second video built with a custom text to image AI pipeline, follows a figure staring into a galaxy whose horizon grows into a face that later dons a space helmet and travels among the stars.,It was auctioned as part of Phillips' exhibition “Ex Machina: A History of Generative Art”, and Spalter has described working with the software as “like working with another artist in your studio”.
Her work appeared in the “SIGGRAPH 1992 Art Show”, among the first major international exhibitions of digital art, and in “The Computer in the Studio” (1994), a survey co-organized by the DeCordova Museum and The Computer Museum. Her pieces are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the RISD Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and have been auctioned by Sotheby's and Phillips.In November 2022 her work was included in “Peer to Peer” at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, curated by Tina Rivers Ryan.She held a solo show at Expanded Art, Berlin, in November 2023.AI Spaceships (2022), a 501-work collection, opened Sovrn's curated programme, and a work from the series has entered the permanent collection of the Francisco Carolinum museum in Linz.
With her husband Michael, Spalter built the Spalter Digital collection, spanning more than 1,000 works from early computer art and plotter drawings to contemporary NFTs, with pieces loaned to MoMA, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.She has served as an advisor to Le Random, drawing on decades of experience in digital art history and education.
