Andrew Strauss is a visual artist based in Canberra, Australia, who works with self-coded software, generative automation and pen plotters to make abstract, patterned compositions. He spent two decades as an art director, graphic designer and illustrator in Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles and Santiago before returning to Canberra to work as a full-time artist.
For years he kept his fine art practice, rooted in printmaking and ink on paper, separate from his design work, before merging the two into a single practice built on creative coding, mathematics and algorithms. His 2021 series Utopias of the Damned is a homage to Canberra, Australia's national capital and the country of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, depicting brutalist government architecture set against native bush and manicured parkland. Ides of March, a debut collaboration with p4stoboy, builds on that concept, pairing Strauss's Canberra-inspired brutalist structures with a programmatic system by p4stoboy governing structure, space and light, rendered isometrically.
Meditations: Pessimism, a 2023 series of 40 works made with JavaScript and p5.js, portrays a dark, ever-changing cityscape whose structures sway, interlock and transform yet always return to their original state.
