Andrew Bell makes character-driven animation and illustration, working across client commissions and personal projects that include generative code art. Based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, he has worked in motion design for more than a decade, delivering animated content for clients including Discovery Channel and the NHS. In 2022 he began making generative art with the JavaScript library p5.js after discovering the practice through fxhash, starting with the piece Grid Cutter.
Bell has repeatedly contributed character designs to Pictoplasma's open calls and festival exhibitions between 2018 and 2020, including a character loop screened at the festival's Berlin edition in 2018. His series Energy Sketch began as loose, meditative drawing sessions that let his mind go blank before being refined into finished shapes. It was published as a hardback art book and released as a collection of 150 one-of-one NFTs sold through OpenSea.
