Andreas Gysin (Swiss, b. 1975) is an artist and designer working across interactive installations, kinetic and digital sculptures, and generative art, often with Sidi Vanetti, for public spaces and institutions.Based in Lugano, Switzerland, he runs a studio for procedural graphics and animations for screen and print.,His solo on-chain work often builds images and patterns from ASCII characters, each piece behaving like a functioning device that loops, reacts, or runs indefinitely.,
His interest in code traces back to an early exposure to ASCII and ANSI art in the 1980s.Gysin met his longtime collaborator Sidi Vanetti while studying at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Ticino. During the final year of his graphic-design studies he created a public SMS installation for a festival in Fribourg that toured several cities, and with Vanetti created a new interactive installation every month for two years at a cultural center near Locarno. In October 2020 he minted the ASCII-based piece 1603311416192 on Rarible.
On fx(hash) he released Towers (2022),followed by Device 1 and Smooth Steps (2023), his third fxhash collection. As ertdfgcvb, he designed the logo for “DYOR” at Kunsthalle Zürich in 2022,the same year he released LCD 1, a limited edition handheld device developed with engineer Marco Lurati that displays generative ASCII animations on a monochrome screen.
With Kim Asendorf and Leander Herzog, Gysin formed the collaborative group AGH, which premiered real-time animations on a single LED wall at Funkhaus Berlin in December 2023, where he showed Crush. The group presented an expanded version, AGH1 Dubai, at Gallery 4, Foundry, during Art Dubai in February 2024.With Vanetti, Gysin also exhibited “Materialized” at Verse in 2023, translating their collaboration into physical works spanning mechanical split-flap and seven-segment displays, vacuum fluorescent displays, and repurposed LED matrices, including 64 Pixels and Recursive Tile.
Lattice (2025) was shown at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in February 2025, in dialogue with Jean Nouvel's Mashrabiya, in an Arab Bank Switzerland presentation curated by Nina Roehrs, before entering the bank's collection in Geneva.,,Christie's included his Crush in the Bridging Worlds auction for the UN Refugee Agency in 2024.In 2026 his fully on-chain series Meltdown (2023–26) sold out through Nguyen Wahed at Art Basel's Zero 10 sector in Basel for $72,000 total across sixteen works at $4,500 each.
His works are held in the collections of HeK Basel, the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, and the Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana in Lugano. He has taught interaction design and programming at ECAL in Lausanne and SUPSI in Lugano, and until 2026 served as a juror on the Federal Design Commission and for the Swiss Design Awards.
