Alvis Lee is a Taiwanese new media artist based in London and Taiwan. His practice spans generative art, audiovisual performance, and new media installation, drawing on personal experience to explore the connections between digital technology, living environments, and social media.He is also a lecturer at Shih Chien University's Department of Communication Design in Taipei.,
His series Surrounding Things (質生塵), shown at the Shanghai Film Art Center in 2023, uses code written to mimic the mathematics of natural flow to generate visuals and sound, with pixels accumulating like dust to build up an image of ease and simplicity.,For Unseen, shown at Uncommon Gallery in Seoul in 2024, he used shaders and open climate data to turn the data trails left by typhoons into algorithmic paintings, raising awareness of how the climate is changing.Magnolia Portrait renders a paper texture based on a traditional Taiwanese fabric curve system through a GLSL fragment shader, cycling across 26 color palettes, 12 picture frames, and 29 kinds of motion.
Lee also performs live audiovisual work: for Thunder Fire Bloom (雷火豐) at the Lacking Sound Festival in Taipei in 2022, he paired algorithmically generated visuals with organic sounds from handpans and singing bowls and synthesizers, working with the electronic musician Dusa.In 2024 he performed In-Lightning (浮光入室) at the C-LAB Dome in Taipei, blending algorithmically generated light into forms of cloud, mist, and water for the opening of the Taipei stop of “dialog()”.“dialog()” was a generative art exhibition connecting Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul, and Beijing, featuring 40 artists from the four cities, and Lee showed as part of its Taipei unit.He holds a master's degree in industrial design from Shih Chien University in Taipei and a master's degree in new media art from Taipei National University of the Arts.
