Alexandra Crouwers (Dutch, b. 1974) makes films, video installations and 3D-scanned digital sculptures that examine ecosystem collapse and the relationship between human and non-human worlds. She works across GIFs, augmented reality, emoji proposals, audio and text, using digital tools as mediators between time, space and ecology. Based in Antwerp, Belgium, she has minted work on Tezos since 2021.
Crouwers studied painting at AKV St. Joost in Den Bosch and earned a master of fine arts at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam in 2001, before studying Film Studies and Visual Culture at the University of Antwerp in 2004 and 2005. She has pursued a PhD in Arts at LUCA School of Arts and KU Leuven in Brussels since 2019 through the research project Summoning a Forest, which examines ecological collapse and digital mediation through the case of a family forest destroyed by a spruce bark beetle outbreak. The project produced Mistakes. The Artist Talk, a film made during the 2020 pandemic lockdown as a response to the crisis, and its 2022 sequel NGMI, which processes post-pandemic disappointment through a series of chapters blending information, absurdity and speculation. The film also gave its title to her solo exhibition “NGMI” at Collectie De.Groen in Arnhem in 2022.
