Alex Trochut (b. 1981) is a designer, illustrator and letterer whose practice centres on typography. Born in Barcelona, he studied at Elisava Escola Superior de Disseny and later moved to New York City. He sees typography as working on two levels: the image of the word comes first and reading second, and he aims to make seeing and reading one action. His clients include Nike, The Rolling Stones and The New York Times.
In 2008 Trochut was named an Art Directors Club Young Gun, and he spoke at the OFFF festival in Lisbon, where he stood out among the typographers. His monograph More Is More, published in 2011, covers his working methods and influences. He then invented a printing process that shows two separate images on one surface, one visible in light and one only in the dark. He used it in Binary Prints (2013), a series of portraits of electronic musicians, which was shown at Sonar Festival in Barcelona and at Colette in Paris, among other venues. The follow-up series Fine Line (2014) changes with the viewer's position, and was made in collaboration with Isabelita Virtual.
