Alessandro Fiore is a generative artist and creative coder based in Rome, Italy,,who also releases work under the alias Whitekross.Working mainly in p5.js, he creates long-form generative art for platforms including fx(hash) and Art Blocks,,moving over time from early, texture-based pieces toward a more geometric, optical-art-influenced style shaped by Italian painters.
Fiore studied sociology rather than computer science at university, but taught himself Flash and ActionScript before moving to Processing around 2007 to 2009. He began working as a professional programmer around the same time and drifted away from the creative coding community, rediscovering it during the pandemic when he found fx(hash) while on parental leave after the birth of his first son. He has worked as a team lead on a dev team at Hootsuit, a social-media software company, for about five years, alongside his generative art practice.
His fx(hash) piece Anabasis — a Greek word for 'uprising' that he pronounces the Italian way — was the first project he made specifically with an fx(hash) release in mind, and it introduced a denser, textured style that departed from his earlier work built from ported Processing sketches. The piece Damn everything but the circus! reuses code from Anabasis and takes its title from an E.E. Cummings quote about the circus, which Fiore felt suited its vintage mood, evoking the 1920s and 30s, better than its original working title, 'The Clown.' A later trilogy — Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting), Annihilate This Week and One of These Days — takes its titles from song titles, including Elton John's 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting,' and each token changes appearance depending on the day of the week it is viewed.
With Emanuele Pasin, Fiore also released tratti, a collaboration whose Italian title, meaning 'traits,' reflects how the two artists combined their individual styles into lines and a rough, hand-drawn motif.His long-form generative project Umbrae was named in a roundup of long-form generative art within Solana's NFT ecosystem.Fiore's work was also included in “Under Neith”, a curated group show on Foundation.app alongside Night Sea, Sterling Crispin and Jonathan Barbeau.
