A. L. Crego (Spanish, b. 1987) is a self-taught digital artist from Galicia, in northern Spain, who works primarily in the GIF format, treating the loop as his central artistic medium.,,Frustrated by the trivial, humorous gifs common online, he set out to redefine the format as a serious art form. His seamless looping creates a meditative effect for viewers.
Crego was drawn to literature and music from a young age, an interest that led him toward creating images through words. After college he studied photography for two years while working in event photography and album cover design. His interest in gifs grew out of that practice and merged with a love of street art. Inspired by the Mixed Media Collective, he began making street art gifs, eventually creating more than 200 of them, each based on a single photograph. From 2014 to 2018 he focused on street art within the digital realm, sharing his work on Tumblr. In 2018 he began combining blockchain technology with his gifs and joined the platform MakersPlace. On June 6, 2019 he minted his first work, Noisy fountains of silence.
Crego calls his constantly evolving style No-ism, based on his belief that adding "-isms" to anything risks turning it into a cult. He explores that theme in the series Amniotic Culture. Its triad Code Error shows coding errors either causing problems or giving rise to new specimens. Among his projects is H3LIX, a GIF art gallery in the metaverse comprising 300 one-of-one pieces, a custom smart contract, a virtual reality space, and web3 integration. It is built around his technique of animated, pulsating light and white pixels set against a black background. In 2023 Crego made Symbiosis, a 3D and video work made for the exhibition “Ilusiones Arbóreas” at NFT Show Valencia, Spain, and minted in an edition of 208 that July. The work was later shown as part of a satellite exhibition of pieces by FuturaCanvas #0 artists at Becoming Art in Jeju, South Korea, in the autumn of 2024.
