1mposter is a Brazilian digital media artist who creates images built entirely from ASCII characters, generated with a custom-built solver inside the 3D software Houdini. Drawing on influences from science and mythology, the work invites repeated viewing that reveals new detail over time, as individual characters shift with the contrast of the underlying image.
1mposter has more than fifteen years of experience in motion design and 3D, and typically builds each piece around a specific reference drawn from art history, mythology, science or film. Freedom reinterprets Eadweard Muybridge's 1878 series The Horse in Motion, specifically the card Sallie Gardner at a Gallop, and removes the jockey to leave only the running horse. Routine draws on the myth of Sisyphus, condemned to roll a boulder uphill forever, alongside paintings of the subject by Franz von Stuck, Jan Mesker and Titian. Smash, a generative art project, takes its visual language from particle-collision diagrams recorded inside a particle accelerator.
