0xhaiku is a Japanese conceptual artist who creates on-chain artworks that use blockchain transactions, smart contract logic, and deprecated web technologies as artistic material.,,After directing a theater company in his youth, he worked as a software developer and designer in Tokyo, London, and San Francisco, before shifting his research toward “art system in which anyone can participate” and “relational art in Web3”.,
In 2022 he released marquee shelter, on-chain conceptual NFTs built from the deprecated HTML marquee tag, whose animations can stop working as browsers drop support for the tag unless the owner triggers a one-time resurrection function that replaces it with modern CSS animation.That December he minted Receipt, a fully on-chain, pay-what-you-want NFT whose visual is generated from the amount paid, describing the project as a memorial for the receipts he saw discarded at supermarkets.He followed it with Recycle Bin, which burns any NFT collectors send to its address and returns new generative art derived from the burned token's address and ID, and with human-readable, fully on-chain generative haiku poems drawn from seed phrases modeled on Bitcoin wallet mnemonics.,
In 2023 he made Still Remember, a relational smart contract work in which collectors mint a snapshot of a happy memory from the artist's own past by attaching emoji fragments of their own memories to the transaction.The resulting image corrupts over 180 days unless the token is transferred, and becomes impossible to repair if it goes untransferred for three years, a decay the artist likened to the forgetting curve of human memory.,Physical prints of the piece were shown at the “Proof of X” exhibition in Tokyo in 2023.Selected for a Bright Moments residency in May 2023, he made Public Art, his first work built on the ArtBlocks Engine, generating tiles in a palette inspired by Vermeer's paintings, ukiyo-e, and Dutch abstract painting, based on patterns from the streets of Omotesando in Tokyo.,At the accompanying Bright Moments event in Japan, he issued matching paper receipts by hand from a portable receipt printer as collectors minted the work.,
In 2024 he extended the idea in [Deprecated] The Grand Canal, Venice for “Web as a Medium”, an obsolete marquee tag piece in a palette from 18th-century paintings of Venice, built to eventually stop functioning.That year Receipt entered the collection of Fingerprints DAO, and he joined Bright Moments' Finale Collection, a single-contract release by more than sixty artists marking the end of its three-year tour at the 2024 Venice Biennale.,
