0xbenj is a generative artist, coder and photographer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, who works under a pseudonym to allow himself the freedom to take creative risks. His generative work, made in JavaScript with the p5.js library, is a counterpoint to his software-engineering day job in energy, billing and financial services, and explores the human and emotional side of technical subjects.
He released his first generative art collection, GRAVITATE, on fxhash in January 2023, a 77-edition series layering grids of circles at varying sizes to produce dithering effects.,Frequency of Affection, released through Blind Gallery in June 2023, drew on the interplay between signal and noise in physical and digital systems and sold out in presale.,Temporality followed in September 2023, exploring impermanence and erosion using JavaScript, p5.js, chroma.js and GLSL.He has also collaborated with the generative artist Rob Scalera on what lingers within, a piece released on fxhash that draws in part on the sinusoid-based compositions of Masaru Fujii.
Civic Nostalgia, released on fxhash in April 2024, is a 220-edition series inspired by post-war Brutalist architecture, with its eighteen color palettes named after the artist's favorite Brutalist buildings. Forma Brutalis, a 731-piece collection made for the Genuary 25 event, was released on EditArt in January 2025 in response to a prompt inspired by Brutalism. Alongside his generative practice, 0xbenj has worked in long-exposure seascape and cityscape photography since 2008, when he began photographing while living and travelling in Europe.
