I have no intention of turning my neck in any other direction. I lack the energy to shift my gaze anywhere away from where my eyes are locked. Perhaps owing to what I’ve eaten, drunk, or heard, I watch my own sullen expression in the window’s reflection. Every now and then, when my focus drifts, I look outside at the fields battling the wind.
The tree atop the hill holds its resolute stance, seemingly determined to look down on something grander than itself. Green fields, insects roaming through the grass, and the damp earth hiding under rocks are among the few things I see that still hold a scent. I can't make sense of the clouds—motionless, merely reflecting light. Why do they stand so still up there? Were they created to veil something hidden behind them?
If my window weren't so dusty, I might be able to see more. I’m too lazy to clean it, too listless to wipe off the dust using the curtains. It feels as though I am always moving against the grain of things. I am too cowardly to let the wind burst in and challenge me as well. Days pass without me budging from my spot, with no one and nothing watching over me.
