Made in solid marble, this piece is 4.5 meters high and was found in the basement of an Anglican church in what is now known as the south of Scotland. Dubbed ' The Angels Rage', this play depicts the wrath of the archangels Gabriel and Raphael over Num, a boy who challenged God to show his existence in the 16th century.
Num was always a restless and incredulous boy of any belief. The son of Christian parents, Num was forced to attend services. Ironically Num was killed by thieves on the farm where he lived one Sunday morning... just when he managed to escape church appointments.
Carved by a local craftsman at the request of his parents, 'The Angels Rage' is an obsessive demonstration of the belief that Num's death was a work of God.
Years after the death of the parents, the church removed the piece that had remained for 114 years in the central square and hid it in the basement, at the request of the bishop, because due to the unfolding of the Protestant Reformation, angelic images could not portray negative feelings such as anger, as that would drive away new followers.
