Open sewage is a reality for a considerable portion of the population. According to data from the Trata Brasil Institute, almost 100 million Brazilians do not have access to sewage collection services and only 49% of all the sewage generated in the country undergoes some kind of treatment.
From the global point of view, the situation is not much better. A report done by the World Health Organization (WHO), in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), indicates that six out of ten people in the world do not have access to safe sanitation.
