Are we not machines?
It's easy to perceive ourselves as different from our machines. Just as we draw a distinction between us and the Earth. However, I challenge anyone to draw a dividing line that we can all agree on.
We cannot separate ourselves from the Earth in any material way, just as a stone in the forest cannot separate itself from the colonies of algae, plants and animals thriving upon it. We have a similar relationship with machines. They are evolving with us and soon we will be propelled to worlds we simply cannot imagine.
As of this writing, midjourney is the first mass market Ai that has been released. Stability Ai is just now gaining traction as new outputs emerge from beta. Dall-E is also coming. Similar Ai technologies are being introduced for writing and music generation. Next will be 3D rendering, animation, film and more.
These software programs are able to combine and remix hundreds of years of human creativity and produce an infinite number of derivatives. All at incredible speed. Before Ai, this work was slow. Creative skills and processes were passed from one artist to the next, generation after generation. What once took decades is condensed to mere minutes. Soon the output from Ai will be indistinguishable from humans. Not long after, Ai output will exceed us.
Selected artifact from the "Project Ai" creative session that took place on August 11, 2022. Part of a larger series of work exploring Ai art projected onto the human form.
