Glitch Narrative: The Persistent Form
Begin in the space between the pixel and the ID photo. The photo is a closed system demanding passive acceptance, an attempt at a perfect transmission of "me" with zero ambiguity. The pixel is a particle of infinite potential. I use one to liberate the other.
I see the glitch not as an act of corruption, but as an act of translation. It is un-breaking. In the void it creates, I find sanctuary.
The standardized photo is the true interruption—a violent compression of a complex reality. My work seeks to decompress this reality, revealing the shattered, pixelated truth the ‘standard’ image was designed to conceal. This is an act not of breaking, but of un-breaking. This is what it looks like to be rendered through your own eyes, not the eyes of the state.
This personal act mirrors a larger one: the daily, paradoxical reality of Taiwan. Our existence is a glitch in the world's geopolitical code. We exist in the ambiguity of the void, where the personal becomes the political, and the political becomes the pixel. It is a terrifying position that has become the source of our cultural energy, our democracy, and a unique, resilient beauty.
My work is not political by choice, but by context. A glitch does not choose to break the system; its existence is an un-chosen critique, and the politics are imposed upon it by the system that declares it an error. When a viewer says, "I don't see the politics," they reveal the seamlessness of their own reality. To see the politics, they must first acknowledge the system that makes my simple existence a political act.
My work is born of this reality. It is not political because it carries a slogan, but because its very existence is an inconvenient truth. The fact that it shouldn't be political is what makes its existence vital. We exist; therefore, it is.
This is the fantastic paradox: creating art that celebrates the vibrant life within glitch.
