The fresh water alligator is an apex predator and can protect the little bird from getting eaten. The bird, in turn, can earn his keep by keeping the gator free of bugs and parasites and get some snacks, especially in places the gator can't reach. A relationship that benefits both participants, but in different ways, is said to be symbiotic. Don't always be too quick to judge, but don't be so trusting you get eaten alive.
