The Abyss You Cannot Train by Yuran Yakon is a collection of audiovisual works that refer to the gaze of deep-sea creatures, the human imagination, and the limits of data driven AI image and video generators. Each of the ten works consists of two similar videos placed side by side to create an analogy with the pair of human eyes. Created using an AI video generator, the central aesthetic moments are the movement through an undefined space and the oscillation between abstract surfaces and more concrete associations with the deep sea.
The combination of movement, digital aesthetics and sound creates an uncertain sensation, opening up a space that invites us not only to think about what we can see, but also to use our imagination to envision places that are unknown and unseen. Digital technology evokes the process of imagination, but it evolves into something that cannot be captured by it in the human consciousness.
Yuran emphasises the representational limitations of artificial intelligence to create an experience that evokes the imagination. All the videos are based on two generated multiple-frame videos with exactly the same images and prompts. Then, the material is compressed, resized and manipulated by different programmes to achieve an aesthetic that retains the movement associated with AI video generation, but without reproducing concrete forms of representation.
The abyss is more than information; it is an existential experience that defines the way of being in the world as a creature. The relationship between the deep sea, a space inhabited by unknown and unseen forms of live, and the contemporary human condition, in which we are increasingly defined by the limits of data, raises questions about our existential purpose as beings and as creatures.
