I've been fortunate in my life that my parents were avid travelers and I got to travel much more than average from early on. I think one of the side effects of travel is by seeing places and people which are strange to you, you might gain something called empathy which seems to be quite lacking in many people today which might be one of the causes of social injustice and inequality. I might be in the ethnic majority in Japan, but was totally in the minority while I lived in the US and having had that experience might me feel more empathy towards the Kurds living in Japan seeking asylum for example. They are in a tough position by which they don't often have the right to stay or work, but if they get deported back to their country, they could face severe punishment. There are Japanese people who think the Kurds and other immigrants are bad and commit hate crimes against them. While I don't make my art in order to convey message or try to fight social injustice, these thoughts did pop into my head while I thought to describe this piece. I'm sure you will not get any of that just by looking at the image, but I do think just opening yourself up to different things, places, people can lead to a a more peaceful world little by little.
