the rides I always see in my dreams, those short but often looping, heroic journeys that soothe me each night.
my favorite, light as a feather to me, a bike whose weight I’ve never truly known, the one I learned to ride late as a child, the one that threw me off countless times when I was just starting out— scraping my knees, becoming the reason for mocking smiles on the faces of those who watched me fall— my bike, my dream, my very first toy.
my mother always asked me to ride it carefully, and when my grandma saw me on it for the first time, she watched with curiosity—then when I fell, she laughed too. “You’ll never learn,” she said.
perhaps that’s why, to prove her wrong, even when I didn’t enjoy it much, I kept riding.
every evening after dinner, I set out down the road, and I kept going until the streetlights on the roadside ran out— then, before vanishing into the dark, I stopped, and turned back.
