For centuries, wars have been waged, kingdoms have risen, and families have fallen apart over a yellow metal that is still said to be largely undiscovered. Among humanity’s countless absurd ideas, this uniquely foolish obsession has long occupied the thoughts of me—a weapon maker. I’ve always found the lengths people go to obtain it, and the meaningless factors that determine its value, utterly ridiculous and senseless.
I spent countless nights in my workshop mulling over these ideas. Sometimes I thought I was wasting my mind on this nonsense. Other times, I considered approaching it seriously and inventing something to make it all easier. I’ve already achieved incredible things by accidentally creating devices—I beg you, don’t tell anyone my secret. I wouldn’t want to be disgraced or exiled from this city. People trust me. They await my next invention with impatience, believing that a “glorious” master like me appears only once in a thousand years. I don’t want to disappoint them.
The idea of crafting a weapon that could simplify gold discovery kept nagging at me. I stuck to my usual method: always leave a door open for absurdity and impossible mechanical ideas. You cannot imagine how surprising the results of this open-mindedness can be. Some of my inventions born this way—I’ll tell you about them another time. But today’s focus is my gold-detecting weapon.
When you look at it, you might realize I fused a human body with an ordinary handgun. I’m not quite sure how the idea took root in my mind. I believe it must be one of the most absurd concepts I’ve come up with to date. I assembled the parts and conducted my first tests by the seaside, and then in a clearing a few kilometers from my home. The results were astonishingly successful. Turns out there was some truth to the stories I’d heard over the years. I really did find gold in many spots—but reaching it wasn’t easy. I had to dig 3 to 4 meters deep each time, proving my weapon was even more powerful than I imagined.
I marked each spot in a way only I could understand. I’ll return later to collect everything I can. I have no intention of telling anyone about my new invention. This is the most valuable thing I’ve ever created, and I’m not about to let anyone else get their hands on it. I know people will stop at nothing to steal it. I’ve seen what they’re capable of.
