In Brazil, rap battles became popular in the 1990s, but were only recognized as an event in 2003 with the emergence of the pioneering Batalha do Real, in Rio de Janeiro.
In São Paulo, the Batalha do Santa Cruz emerged as the main exponent, which gave space to Emicida, one of the main names in the history of rap in Brazil, and the first brazilian rapper to be recognized abroad.
This artwork is based on a photo taken by us, during a Battle that was taking place on a stage mounted under an overpass, called Viaduto do Chá, in downtown São Paulo.
Rap and those Rap Battles have become in recent years a striking part of Brazilian musical culture.
This work is minted for the #TezBattle event of 2022.
