Blockchains are run by validators aka miners or as we call them on Tezos: bakers. Bakers create and append the blocks to the blockchain and they monitor each other so no-one tries to manipulate the chain. Running a validator should be accessible to everybody to avoid that your blockchain is run by an elite that is defined by their wealth, their access to compute power or high end internet connections. IMO this is an integral part of decentralisation.
This graph shows how much money you need to be able to participate in the compared blockchains as a validator and don’t bleed money for running costs! In this case the lowest bar is the best. You might have guessed, Tezos is far more accessible then all the others.
Blockchain is about being self-sovereign. Not just when you're rich! Anyone must be able to operate a validator without high requirements in terms of hardware, internet connection and costs.
