Yuliya Solntseva in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮 {1924} :: Solntseva also played Aelita, the Queen of Mars in the eponymous film by Yakov Protazanov. Some years later she married Oleksandr Dovzhenko and worked with him on his films. After his death she continued directing by herself and won the Best Director award at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival for 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 - the first woman to be awarded this prize; the second being Sophia Coppola for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘥 in 2017
