'Uhuru' is the Swahili word for 'freedom.' The peak was named to commemorate Tanzania's independence from colonial rule in 1961. Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain globally, rising approximately 4,900 meters (16,100 feet) from its base.
