Hercules and the Hydra
Art collections are inherently surreal. By transporting an object into another context, new relationships and narratives emerge. We appreciate it differently, in a space where display cases, precision lighting, and grand architecture invite veneration and re-interpretation.
This large charcoal drawing was made for the V&A museum to investigate the language of museums. A small Renaissance bronze of Hercules occupies a central case in a gallery overlooking the Grand Entrance. Beyond, the glass chandelier by Dale Chihuly spreads its tendrils. The abstracted reflections of Victorian architecture draw us into another dimension where we join the Ancient Greek on his adventures.
