Secret Lives of Vulcans: The Trouble with Torpor (Secret Lives of Vulcans 112)

On Vulcan, seasonal hibernation (known natively as T'Pau-Torpor) is not triggered by the gentle blanket of snow, but by the relentless fury of the Fire Season—a planetary shift where thermal winds scour the red deserts of the Forge and atmospheric moisture drops to near-zero, turning riverbeds into cracked obsidian. Ambient temperatures spike well beyond tolerable biological limits, driving even rugged sehlats and armored sand-mastodons deep into the shelter of subterranean magma tubes.

Security Officer Soval had been assigned the perimeter detail with a single, straightforward directive: confirm that the apex predator terrorizing Outpost Delta had transitioned into its seasonal torpor so the landing party could pack up and leave. According to standard Starfleet xenobiological field manuals, the Arcturian Fur-Beast is supposed to enter torpor as Vulcan reaches perihelion beneath the blazing orange primary of 40 Eridani A. Science Officer Soval had double-checked the charts, calibrated the ambient temperature, and prepared for his field research. The Arcturian Fur-Beast, however, sporting the resting scowl of an aggrieved Klingon and a metabolism seemingly fueled entirely by spite, had no intention of clocking out.

Following protocol, Soval attempted to induce slumber through acoustic conditioning. He recited seven straight chapters of Surak’s Treatise on Sub-atomic Logic in a monotone drone designed to suppress synaptic hyperactivity. The creature merely blinked, emitted a low rumble that sounded suspiciously like mockery, and chewed through Soval’s spare tricorder strap.

Next came the Vulcan nerve pinch. Soval applied a precise, calibrated pressure between the trapezoid ridge and the cervical tendon. The fur-beast did not collapse into a peaceful stupor; instead, it leaned into the touch, began purring with the resonance of a malfunctioning warp core, and licked the eyebrow right off Soval's forehead.

Desperate to avoid an unfavorable report on his service record, Soval initiated a psychic contact to broadcast deep, tranquil waves of cosmic stillness directly into the brute’s prefrontal cortex. The meld backfired instantly. Instead of pacifying the monster, Soval absorbed the full, crushing brunt of the alien’s psychic exhaustion, leaving his own synapses short-circuited.

Overcome by artificial fatigue and the sheer physiological weight of the ordeal, the Vulcan’s stoic resistance finally collapsed. His eyes fluttered shut, his head slumping heavily against the creature's furrowed brow in absolute, helpless slumber.

It was a fatal miscalculation of tactical proximity. For all his devotion to Vulcan logic, Soval had fundamentally misunderstood the creature’s biological imperative—it had not been fighting off sleep out of malice, but out of a physiologic need to secure one final, nutrient-dense feast before the long calorie deficient slumber. As the security officer’s final distress beacon emitted a solitary, ignored chirp into the night, Soval remained peacefully nestled against the warm, matted fur—wholly oblivious to the low stomach growl vibrating through the wide-awake beast’s chest.
