The Iranian Uprising of 1401, also known as the Mahsa Revolution or the Revolution of Women, Life, and Freedom, was a nationwide and widespread uprising in Iran that began after the beating and killing of Mahsa (Zina) Amini in the Gasht-e Ershad detention center. The first protest rallies of the uprising took place on September 15, 1401, in front of the hospital where Mahsa Amini died (Kasra Hospital) in Tehran, and in the following days spread to all 31 provinces of Iran and lasted for more than four months. The government never recognized these protests and suppressed the protesters, killing hundreds and wounding thousands more. According to the investigation of the United Nations Fact-Finding Commission, the Islamic Republic resorted to crimes such as murder, torture, and sexual assault to suppress the protesters, committing crimes against humanity. The protests were described as "unlike any the country had seen before",the "biggest challenge" to the government, and "most widespread revolt",since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
