Mariela had lived alone, all her life. A life of sorrow and solitude, with no one to comfort her or console. She had seen them all perish, one by one, in a cruel twist of fate; Her family. They were returning from a trip, a rare occasion of happiness, when the ship they were on plunged into the depths of the sea. She was the sole survivor, the lone witness to the tragedy. She bore the burden of their loss, their absence, their silence, in her soul.
Now, Mariela was old and frail, and death was knocking at her door. She felt a sharp pain in her heart, and knew it was time. She closed her eyes, and saw them again. Her family, radiant and cheerful, as they posed for a portrait. It was the only thing she had left of them, the only thing that gave her hope. She reached for it, with feeble hands, and pressed it to her chest. Mariela reviewed all her past, before her very eyes. She sought colors, she smiled, a faint and bitter smile, and murmured their names. Maybe they could hear her, beyond the veil. Maybe they were waiting for her.
Mariela joined them in the portrait, at last, in their everlasting embrace. All her life had led to this moment. All that was left was a portrait. A portrait of a family that once was and now is again. She smiles! Maybe you can hear it behind the screams. Right beside her family!
