Begun among the trees and finished from memory.
I sketched the forest while standing beneath its canopy, then returned to it later through the light and feeling it had left behind.
As the piece unfolded, faces quietly emerged beneath the roots. Whether they are the forest’s spirits, memories held by the earth, or simply shapes our minds long to recognize, I chose not to decide.
Some places remember us long after we’ve gone.
