The night fell heavily over the house as Karen, a remote worker, delved into the silence of her home. Even though the workday had concluded, there were still some pending tasks that required her attention in the makeshift office in her home room.
Karen settled into her desk chair, the dim light of the lamp casting eerie shadows in the corners of the room. While reviewing documents on her computer, a chill ran down her spine. A strange feeling of being watched invaded her, but she attributed the sensation to accumulated fatigue.
As she raised her gaze, Karen noticed something unusual in the reflection on her computer screen. A blurry and dark figure stood behind her, but when she turned around, there was nothing there. She chalked it up to the strain of the day playing tricks on her and continued her work, trying to ignore the growing sense of unease.
As time passed, the atmosphere in the room became thicker. Flickering lights and barely audible whispers filled the air. Karen forced herself to focus, but every keystroke echoed like an ominous reverberation in the silent room.
Suddenly, the lamp flickered and went out. Karen was left in total darkness. She tried to turn it back on, but the bulb refused to illuminate. As she reached for a flashlight in the drawer, a chilly whisper caressed her neck.
She turned sharply, and in the dimness, she discerned a distorted shadow writhing in the corner of the room. Terror seized her as the shadow slowly advanced toward the desk. A distorted echo of childish laughter resonated in the air, but Karen lived alone.
Struggling with panic, Karen left the room, leaving the door slightly ajar. As she walked away, she could hear indistinguishable whispers and laughter fading in the distance. She decided not to return that night, and the next day, after a sleepless night, she found the room in perfect order, as if nothing had happened.
Although she tried to convince herself it was a product of her exhausted imagination, the image of the contorting shadow and the childish laughter haunted her every time she entered her home office, reminding her that in the darkness, something else might be watching from the shadows.
