From antiquity to Shakespeare to the contemporary era, “love” (taken broadly) has long been under the providence of poetry, and poetry under the providence of love. While “hate” is considered to be in direct opposition to “love”, this poem emerges from the way love can not only fade in romantic relationships, but can be transformed into disgust and loathing.
We’ve all been there: made ignorant by love until lovers reveal who they really are, and the feelings turn rancid. This poem speaks to that discovery, the mutation of feelings, and the rage of betrayal.
