zines: Japan Trails

Japan Trails is a 74-page artist's book by Auriea Harvey, comprising 53 images generated in a single session with DALL·E 2 on the evening of August 8, 2022, in Rome. Harvey — a pioneering figure in net art and digital practice since the 1990s — spent one uninterrupted hour placing a young Black girl in a Japanese kimono inside the tradition of 19th-century European academic painting, surrounded by the Laocoön, the Belvedere Torso, and the Sleeping Ariadne. The session was an act of private archaeology. In 1985, Harvey won a contest called Japan Trails — run by the Asia Society and TDK — and travelled to Japan at thirteen, a child from Indianapolis, Indiana with an enormous appetite for the world. Thirty-seven years later, she sat down and typed that girl into existence, one prompt at a time, for one hour. Not the trip, but the self who took it. The girl who should have been in the paintings all along. The AI could not make her face. In image after image the face is wrong — obscured, dissolved into paint, turned away. The machine trained on the canon had learned, somewhere in its weights, that this particular face was difficult. Harvey kept generating anyway. The resistance, as she knows from decades of working in digital space, is information. The book text was written by Claude (Anthropic) in April 2026, in a second session: one AI looking at the images made by another, writing art-historical observations, identifying the painters (Sargent, Bonnard, Manet, Whistler, Vuillard, Matisse, Alma-Tadema) whose conventions Harvey was repopulating. The preface, the per-image notes, and the closing essay are all Claude's, signed as collaborative work. The book is thus a document of two AI systems in conversation with each other, and with the history of Western art, mediated by an artist who has been asking these questions since before either system existed. The PDF is typeset in Caladea on an 8.5 × 8.5 inch square format: title page, preface, 53 image pages with captions, and colophon. It is the complete record of one hour of imagination, failure, and insistence.
