Origin Stories is a series which carries on ideas explored in previous works where extinct species have taken the form of crystals. It is as though complex life has been transformed into pure carbon – that is, into the most concentrated forms of pure carbon in the natural world – diamonds. With monumental efforts to discover life elsewhere, how differently would we value any of the species which we allowed to go extinct today, if they were discovered on another planet?
The title of this series is a direct nod to the many theories, stories and ways of knowing how complex life evolved (taking 4 billion years to do so) and by extension, how incredibly fortunate we were to be a part of it. We are currently living through the 6th mass extinction event on Earth. Unlike the previous 5 caused by natural phenomena, the 6th is caused by human activity. The current rate of loss is estimated between 1,000-10,000 times higher than natural extinction rates. This rate of species population decline and extinction is high enough to directly threaten human life on Earth.
Ultimately, the work asks us to consider what it is that we truly value.
Origin Stories (AR I) will rotate for normal displays. It is also interactive, allowing users to zoom in and out, and tilt the view.
For the animation to work in AR, GTLF (Android users) or USDZ (iOS users) file formats are required and will be supplied to collectors on request.
