The Makura-Gaeshi (枕返し) is a mischievous yokai (evil spirit) that appears in various stories from Japanese folklore. Its name means "pillow flipper", and true to its nickname, it hides in bedrooms, waits for the occupants to sleep in the bed, then steals the sleepers' pillows from under their heads and puts them back on their feet. Some don't flip the pillow, but lift and flip people. Others pick up entire tatami mats that people sleep on and bounce them off. Still others are said to sit on their victim's chest while they sleep, pressing hard and pushing air out of their lungs. Occasionally they cause kanashibari or sleep paralysis. The most extreme stories say that anyone who sees a makura-gaeshi loses consciousness, after which the makura-gaeshi steals their souls and leaves them dead...
