These pieces are unique and have been used as pfp - a new genre in miniature? and exhibited on LED screens. Alternatively, they can occupy the space of a traditional painting, portrait or otherwise, by being printed and wall-hung.
I was grateful to receive a commission via dm/twitter in this case from WilyGuys. Their source digital image was manipulated by hand and my copy was deleted on completion of the work.
The process is similar to the way in which a Renaissance court painter used the information presented to them, i.e. what they could see and the information they could glean from such a presentation, to make an artistic response, a portrait.
From this idea, a few thoughts on the history of portrait painting coalesced, giving me the impetus to push the idea further.
What is the utility of a portrait? Does our use of ‘pfp’ continue to facilitate those utilities?
