me, myself and (a)I [7] Virtual Sculpture, Augmented Reality 2025
“me, myself and (a)I” is a series of self-portraits created in collaboration with multiple AI systems, existing both as digital images and as shimmering, three-dimensional frames that come to life through augmented reality. At the heart of the work is a machine-learning AI trained on custom datasets derived from Martina Menegon’s bathtub selfies. The training is deliberately left incomplete, allowing for fluid, unpredictable transformations that extend her ongoing practice of performative, glitched self-portraiture. These unstable, semi-trained datasets are programmed to come alive through real-time face tracking, enabling Menegon to engage in live interactions with her AI double. Like a kind of embodied puppeteering, she performs through the AI’s fragmented lens, capturing selected poses as screenshots—spontaneous echoes of self shaped in dialogue with the machine. The outputs of this performative process undergo curatorial selection, followed by the application of additional AI processes to refine and evolve them into a final set of digital self-portraits: fragmented, algorithmic embodiments that move beyond mere replication. The final transformation into virtual sculpture with augmented reality capability is made possible through yet another AI-driven process (image-to-3D conversion), with Menegon applying subtle interventions to fine-tune the result. By translating her physical form into an artificial, augmented, shifting self, Menegon explores the intimate entanglements between technology and the self-body, the physical and the virtual, the organic and the inorganic, and the self and its simulation. The project ultimately unfolds as a genuine collaboration between artist and artificial intelligence, each shaping, distorting, and informing the other in the creation of a hybrid, co-authored identity—glitched, fluid, and ever in flux.
