Don't Talk to me While I'm Eating ———————————————————————————————————————————— About “Normals” Collection: The concept of "normal" is a fluid and culturally contingent notion that evolves alongside societal values, norms, and expectations. What is considered normal in one society or historical period may be viewed quite differently in another. Society plays a significant role in defining normalcy, as it sets the standards and benchmarks against which individuals measure themselves and others. These standards encompass a wide array of aspects, including behaviour, appearance, beliefs, and lifestyles. Over time, societal attitudes and perceptions shift, leading to changes in what is deemed acceptable or typical. This dynamic (and socially constructed) nature of normalcy reflects the diversity and complexity of human experiences, highlighting the importance of understanding and respecting differing perspectives within and across cultures.
The notion of normalcy becomes even more complex when considering the experiences of marginalized communities, such as those within the queer spectrum. Queerness challenges traditional notions of normalcy, as it encompasses diverse identities and expressions that may diverge from mainstream expectations. Throughout history, queer individuals have faced discrimination and exclusion for deviating from societal norms regarding sexuality and gender. However, the resilience and activism of queer communities have led to significant progress in challenging and reshaping these norms. Embracing queerness means embracing diversity, authenticity, and self-expression, fostering a society that celebrates the richness of human variation rather than enforcing narrow standards of normalcy. Ultimately embracing our uniqueness and embracing others for theirs enriches our collective experience and fosters a more inclusive and compassionate world. In the end, who wants to be just normal, anyways?
