In Attendance on Dad is a three-panel work about a night and day spent caring for my father when he was ill.
I placed myself and my father side by side, both lying down, as if sharing the same space between wakefulness and sleep. Three portraits of each of us appear across the panels, shifting slightly from one to another and creating a sense of time passing.
I was trying to put him to sleep, to calm him, to stay beside him. In that long stretch of time, care became a way of being present—quietly, completely, and without knowing how much time we had left.
This work holds one of those moments that remain in memory long after the person is gone.
