Fading Together Acrylic on silk, 42 × 24 cm, 2023
Part of my Remembrance: Love and Grief series.
Based on a photograph of my parents sitting together, this painting revisits a familiar image of their shared presence. Their figures appear through layers of blue, light green, white, and deep navy, formed from countless small expressive marks. Their faces remain partially recognizable while dissolving into the surrounding color.
The mirrored composition evokes a reflection on water, where an image can appear simultaneously present and unreachable. Here, the reflection does not simply repeat the figures; it fragments and transforms them, echoing the way memory changes as time passes.
After loss, images of those we love can become both anchors and unstable traces. In returning to this photograph, I am not trying to preserve my parents exactly as they were, but to encounter their presence through the shifting surface of memory.
The figures remain together, even as their forms begin to fade.
