For nearly 20 years, every time I was asked what was my job, and I threw myself into explanations about my job and the associated issues, I noticed that in 99% of cases, I lost my audience after a few minutes, whether with strangers, buddies or friends. Over time I understood that most people are not able to understand what a person really does for work, but above all, that most people do not really want to hear you talk, they want you to listen to them talk.
I have therefore gradually developed my own usual response to any question that would involve me revealing myself in one way or another and therefore requiring that I be granted adequate speaking time to do so: "It is complicated" ...
It's my favorite phrase, the one that allows me immediately and flawlessly to divert attention and bounce back to make the other speak rather than me, the one that makes any interlocutor satisfied, because they can talk to me, and I listen to them. It's complicated to agree to be voluntarily invisible, but it's a choice that allows you to see through people, while remaining secret about yourself.
Staying in the shadow can be really enlightening ... but it's complicated.
