Description: The first Native American saint, known for her piety and dedication to Christianity amidst hardships.
Biography:
Known as the Lily of the Mohawks, Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, located in present-day New York. She was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and a Roman Catholic Algonquin mother. At a young age, Kateri was orphaned during a smallpox epidemic, which left her with impaired vision and a disfigured face.
Despite facing hardships, Kateri became deeply devoted to her Christian faith after being baptized at age 20. Her commitment to Christianity in the face of opposition and her dedication to a life of prayer, penance, and care for the sick and elderly in her community were highly regarded.
Kateri Tekakwitha passed away on April 17, 1680, at the age of 24. Her last words were reported to be "Jesus, I love you." After her death, many reported miraculous healings associated with her, and she was canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 2012, becoming the first Native American saint.
