M-theory, also known as "string theories", uses an hyperdimensional formalism to describe the physical universe. According to these theories, geometry of space time can be described by using more than 9 dimensions in the equations. Our observable universe then would be living on a brane, a kind of hyperdimensional surface which determines the geometry of space and time. The quantity of dimensions required by each version of these theories is called "signature of the worldvolume".
