I can't describe the situation I'm facing. I am trying to understand how this thing stands there, how it breathes the air. It is impossible for a drop of water to rest upon it; its surface is so slick and polished that seconds after first laying eyes on it, everything took on its hue, and for hours, I saw the world in a different color. Is this thing—so extraterrestrial that it distorts my perceptions—a metal, or a surreal object so beyond definition that humanity has never seen its like before? My first thought was that beings from beyond this world must have used it in the construction of a spacecraft. This cliché context made me laugh later, and then I stopped laughing, realizing how shallow my imagination was.
I must tell you, it is moving toward me. Although I try not to be uneasy, I feel as if this thing will crush me, and under its heavy mass, I will become one with the earth. Perhaps it is very light or hollow, but does it truly have an interior, or a dimension that can be defined by the laws of physics as I know them? As it approaches me, it stops occasionally, swaying gently as if sniffing the air. Or is it I who am moving toward it?
As its sharp edges gradually extend toward my body, I cannot hold myself back from reaching out my hands. I am consumed by a great hunger, as if touching it would provide the answers to all the questions in my mind. I want to understand which of us might be more lethal—it or I—and I want to see other things that resemble it.
