The Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) is known in Spanish as “Carpintero Gigante”, given that it is the only large woodpecker in its distribution, with a size of 43 cm. Its range is restricted to southern South America, being found in the Nothofagus forest on both sides of the Andes in Chile and Argentina.
Although it is currently categorized as “Least Concern” on a global scale, in some Chilean provinces it is considered “Endangered”. In the rest of Chile and Argentina it is categorized as “Vulnerable”.
