CONTEMPORARY A: Xochiquétzal

This digital mixed-media artwork is constructed through a complex layering process that merges traditional drawing with contemporary digital composition. At the center of the piece appears a finely rendered handmade drawing of Xochiquétzal, whose calm and contemplative expression becomes the emotional and visual focal point of the composition.

The portrait is built with delicate cross-hatched lines reminiscent of an engraved illustration, giving the figure a tactile, almost archival quality. Around and behind the figure, multiple digital layers unfold: repeating patterns inspired by ancient Mesoamerican iconography, textured surfaces, and symbolic motifs that echo the visual language of pre-Hispanic codices. Vertical translucent color bands overlap the portrait, creating a sense of time, memory, and cultural continuity.

Along the left side, a column of geometric symbols reinforces the sacred and ceremonial atmosphere of the piece. The background’s repeating animal-like motifs add rhythm and cultural depth, functioning almost like a woven textile or symbolic field.

Together, these layered elements form a visual tribute to feminine strength and cultural heritage. By placing Xochiquétzal at the heart of the composition, the artwork honors women as the foundational force—the “base rock”—of Mexican culture, celebrating beauty, creativity, life, and ancestral identity through a fusion of handmade and digital expression.
