SHAPE // 0005 is a 1x1 pixel video file that runs for 255 calendar years, or: {3,060 months | 13,260 weeks | 93,075 days | 2,233,800 hours | 134,028,000 minutes | 8,041,680,000 seconds}
the file presents an abstract yet optimistic view of the future in the form of a multi-century visual poem, beginning at #000000 (pure black) and transitioning to #FFFFFF (pure white) by 1 shade per year to cover all 256 possible monochrome values in 24-bit RGB color space.
a file of this duration and aspect ratio breaks every common encoding and processing tools and is quite complex to produce. the final (simplified) process consisted of generating 2x2 PNGs for each color value, creating a 1 minute 60fps MP4 for each, stretching to 1 hour, then 1 day, then stitching together and re-encoding into a VP9 WebM, and finally stretching by a factor of 365 and cropping down to 1x1. each step of this process presented challenges and had to be redone dozens of times to ensure compatibility as later steps stretched the limits of modern video encoding. please note that this file will not play on most browsers or programs due to its size and dimensions exceeding their playback limits.
embedded in the piece is a .txt file containing a short reflection by the artist on the nature of technical limitations and how they shape the creative process.
